Det er arrangørernes ambition at gribe bæredygtighed an på en helt ny måde. Derfor har Herning2022 arbejdet tæt sammen med Herning Kommune om en række grønne initiativer. Et af initiativerne er skovrejsning i Herning Kommune, som vil være med til at binde CO2 i årtier frem.
Der bliver inden længe etableret et nyt, rekreativt område, som får navnet VM-Skoven. Der vil officielt blive taget første spadestik til projektet den 26. maj, hvor borgmesteren i Herning, Dorthe West, Growing Trees og arrangørerne af Herning2022 vil plante de første træer.
VM-Skoven bliver en folkeskov, hvor der er mulighed for leg, motion og meget mere. I første omgang bliver der plantet 60.000 træer i skoven, ligesom der er planer om et legeområde med mere.
Folkeskoven skal ligge på et 20 hektar stort areal ved Løvbakkerne, der er et område nord for Herning by.
